MBSR Foundation Course

The Stress Reduction course offered is modeled after the highly researched curriculum originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness in UMass beginning in 1979.  Nearly three decades of scientific research at UMass and at medical centers all over the world suggest that training in mindful awareness and MBSR can positively and often profoundly affect participants ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress while learning to live life more fully.

World wide, tens of thousands of people have participated in the 8 week course and have learned to integrate the methods taught in the program into their everyday lives. Nearly three decades of published research indicates that the majority of people who complete the course report:

  • Lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms
  • An increased ability to relax
  • Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away
  • Greater energy and enthusiasm for life
  • Improved self-esteem
  • An ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations.
What to Expect:
The course schedule consists of eight weekly 2 hour classes and one 1/2 day class on a Saturday or Sunday.  For you to fully benefit     from this program, you must be willing to make a strong commitment to attend all classes and to practice daily home assignments for eight weeks. This highly participatory, practical course includes:
  • Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
  • Gentle stretching and mindful yoga
  • Group dialogue and discussions aimed at enhancing awareness in everyday life
  • Individually tailored instruction
  • Daily home assignments
  • Three home practice CDs and a home practice manual
Tuition Cost for the MBSR Course

The cost for the program is $500.00.  That includes the Orientation Session, the  Eight 2 1/2 hour classes, the Full Day Retreat typically on a Saturday or Sunday, access to  guided Mindfulness Practices, a small workbook, weekly homework handouts and some short readings and ongoing individual email/phone support during the course.  During the course, We also send out group email messages to reinforce what we have learned and to provide links to relevant short videos.

In addition to those basics, it is also important to know that people who take the course have a "lifetime" invitation to all future MBSR retreats that we offer (1 for each class cycle so that currently 3-6 times per year).  At each retreat, there are several people from past classes who join us for the day.

Also, we have been periodically offering 'Alumni' a 2 hour monthly practice meeting (at no cost) as a means to help people keep their practice momentum going or to get restarted if they have stopped for a while.

We also have approval from Board of Social Work to offer 16 CEU credits to licensed social workers who take the course---if this is of interest to you.
